Bronze Level
Beginning with a fun-filled introductory session without your dog, our Bronze level teaches you the basics of learning theory as it applies to dog training. This session allows you the time to practice your timing and skills before taking the information home to begin your training adventure.
In this session students learn about -
- Our training philosophy
- How dogs learn
- The appropriate use of rewards in training
- Breeds and breed specific behaviours
- Canine body language
- The importance of the dog’s name
- The appropriate use of a bridging word or marker
- How to have your dog look at you
- Getting your dog to sit
- The importance of socialisation
- On lead manners for your dog’s first night of training
Every training session will result in homework that can be practiced during the week and is aided by the information provided in the Train at Home Guide which has been written specifically to follow the School’s curriculum and is included in the School Fee.
The weeks that follow will build on the basics of training, often from the dog’s perspective. The behaviours taught in Bronze include -
- Demonstrate foundation skills for bridging
- Gain dog’s attention by using his name
- Ask for dog’s attention with “look/watch”
- Sit by hand signal (no food)
- Basic hand target
- Guardian knows how to “park” and “unpark” dog
- On the mat
- Drop
- Give
- Loose lead walking (LLW) 10m
- Stay 10~30 seconds
- Short distance recall on lead
Upskill Bronze Level – Canine Life and Social Skills B.A.
Upskill Bronze prepares students to undertake the Canine Life and Social Skills (CLASS) Evaluation B.A. for Dogs title and strengthens the behaviours already learned. Those not wishing to undertake the formal evaluation need to demonstrate, to their instructor during the term, that they can carry out those behaviours required for graduation. Upskill Bronze behaviours include -
- Leave it
- Stand
- Drop at side
- Wait at door
- Come and leashing up
- LLW 10m with attention
- Meet and greet
- Leave it
- Wait for food bowl
- Stay – 1 minute
- Settle on mat, in crate, on ground – 1 minute
- Take and give
- Tricks – optional
